Stump Grinding
Grinding is intended to reduce the visible stump below the surrounding surface. It may be appropriate when the primary goal is mowing access, appearance or preparing the area for topsoil and a non-structural landscape finish.
Stumps • Roots • Site Cleanup
Choose the right stump scope for safer access, a cleaner work area and the next planned use of your property.
Plan the Finish Before the Work
A stump that only needs to sit below a future lawn surface is different from one inside a driveway route, building area, utility path or grading plan. Starrett reviews what must remain, what the ground needs to support next and whether the scope calls for grinding, more complete removal, root handling, debris cleanup or connected skid-steer work.
That distinction prevents a customer from assuming every root will disappear or that the area will automatically be ready for concrete, construction or a finished lawn. The accepted estimate identifies the approved depth or removal goal, debris handling and any separate grading or haul-off.
Choose the Right Scope
Size matters, but it is not the only pricing or planning factor. Access, utilities, slope, soil, surrounding hardscape and the future use can change the safest approach.
Grinding is intended to reduce the visible stump below the surrounding surface. It may be appropriate when the primary goal is mowing access, appearance or preparing the area for topsoil and a non-structural landscape finish.
More complete removal may be considered when the stump or root mass conflicts with excavation, a driveway route, drainage work, grading or another planned use. The scope must define how much root material is practical to address.
Forestry mulching and brush clearing do not automatically remove every stump or root. Remaining stumps can be identified after visibility improves and quoted separately for the property’s next phase.
Grinding debris, roots, displaced soil and woody material may remain unless the estimate includes spreading, loading, hauling or rough grading. Tell Starrett whether the goal is simply reduced height or a cleaner area ready for additional work.
Authentic Starrett Property Work
These are authentic Starrett photos from land-clearing and equipment projects—not stock images and not presented as a specific stump-grinding case study. They show the real property conditions and connected machine work that often reveal or follow a stump-removal scope.
Stump results vary with species, decay, root spread, soil, slope, access and the approved finish. A customer should not expect one unrelated project photo to promise an identical result on another property.

Clear Expectations
Stump work is individually quoted after the property details are reviewed. The estimate should identify the approved work so there is no assumption that grinding, root excavation, hauling and finish grading are one automatic package.
Starrett does not publish a universal stump price because diameter, quantity, access, slope, utilities, structures, species, root spread, soil conditions, debris handling and the requested finish can materially change the work. Call or text 859-878-0200 for a property-specific estimate.
Fall & Cooler-Weather Planning
After leaves and seasonal growth thin, stumps, roots, wire, drainage edges and uneven ground may be easier to document. That can help property owners plan stump work before a spring driveway, fence, trail, landscaping or demolition-cleanup project. Fall is not automatically the best season for every site; safe scheduling still depends on soil, weather, access and the approved method.
Reduced vegetation can make hidden stumps, exposed roots, fence wire and access problems easier to photograph and mark.
Decide whether the area will become lawn, trail, driveway access, a work pad or part of a larger clearing plan.
Combine inspection for brush clearing, demolition, rough grading or debris hauling when several parts of the property need attention.
Build an Accurate Estimate
A useful quote needs the stump dimensions and the surrounding property conditions. Wide views help determine whether equipment can reach, position and leave the area safely.
Measure the widest ground-level diameter, count every stump and note whether any are connected, hollow, burned, decayed or surrounded by exposed roots.
Send wide photos or a slow video showing gates, turns, slopes, soft ground, structures, pavement, fences, overhead clearance and known utilities.
Tell Starrett whether the area needs mowing clearance, landscaping, a trail, rough grade, driveway access, excavation or preparation for another contractor.
Property and Utility Safety
Stumps can sit beside buried utilities, septic components, wells, irrigation, drain lines, foundations, pavement, fences and desirable trees. The property owner must identify known hazards and arrange required utility-location steps before excavation or grinding begins. Unknown underground conditions can require a revised plan.
Work close to structures, active utilities, unstable trees or hazardous material may require a qualified specialist or a different method. Starrett confirms whether the requested scope fits the available equipment and safe access before scheduling.
Regional Stump-Work Coverage
Starrett is based in California, Kentucky. Exact availability, travel and equipment access are confirmed from the project address rather than assumed from a broad service map.
California, Alexandria, Cold Spring, Highland Heights, Fort Thomas and surrounding properties needing stump evaluation after clearing, demolition or routine property work.
Covington, Independence, Wilder and nearby Northern Kentucky communities where access, utilities and the requested finish can be reviewed safely.
Florence, Burlington, Hebron, Union and surrounding qualifying properties needing stump work, site cleanup or connected skid-steer service.
Qualifying Cincinnati-area and Tri-State projects are reviewed by exact address, travel, access, stump scope and the intended next use.
Stump Grinding & Removal FAQs
Is grinding the same as full removal?
No. Grinding reduces the visible stump while removal addresses more of the stump and root mass. The next use of the area determines which scope makes sense.
How much does stump work cost?
Starrett quotes after reviewing size, quantity, access, slope, utilities, nearby structures, debris handling and the requested finish. No universal per-inch price is promised.
Does grinding remove every root?
No. Roots can remain below ground after grinding. Structural, utility or excavation plans should be explained before the method is chosen.
Can stump work follow forestry mulching?
Yes. Standard mulching does not automatically include stump removal, so remaining stumps can be evaluated as a separate property phase.
What happens to the debris?
The quote identifies whether grindings remain, are spread, or whether roots, soil and woody material require separate loading and haul-off.
